Sentimental Quilt manifests as a layered, grid-like ceramic piece, echoing the patchwork of memories. Its intricate, textured patterns evoke fragments of personal history, stitched together through flowing slips and frits. The work embodies the fluidity of recollection, where each segment reflects emotional traces and the resilience of layered identity—an abstract visual patchwork of time’s delicate, ongoing embroidery.

Sentimental Quilt encapsulates my journey of identity and belonging as a Singaporean living in Taiwan. Navigating between cultures and languages, I often experience a profound sense of being a "very local foreigner". This duality shapes my solitude, and ceramics serve as a constant medium of creation. Growing up in Singapore with my family’s photo shop, I documented moments in photographs, connecting through visual memories preserved in albums. These familiar images evoke nostalgia, reinforcing my bond to home while highlighting the passage of time. My repetitive ceramic techniques mirror my routines of adaptation and the rhythm of seeking a place to belong. The color palette—shades of blue reminiscent of the sky and sea—embodies longing and melancholy, bridging my internal emotions with external representations. Using alumina molds, porcelain slips, and varied frit ratios, I craft a collage that symbolizes the fluid, mutable nature of memory, identity, and selfhood. Each texture and layer reflects flux, resilience, and the ongoing process of reconciling multiple facets of self—a visual patchwork capturing the delicate, persistent act of belonging amidst displacement and change.

It is flat, but the characteristics of the material are well seen.
