Anne Kwasners’ new work has come as a progression of her ideas of dislocation, diaspora, and the melancholy of displacement which have been a strong foundation in her practice. Drawing is a process of thought for her and also an end product. Her drawing evolves as she explores onglaze on ceramic. Tracing the lines of history, from photos of family she never knew or met on upcycled plates retrieved from opportunity shops as incomplete sets. These plates metaphorically parallel émigrés who have lost members of families to war. Incomplete dinnerware like incomplete families. Kwasner looks at nostalgia and memory in reference to the migrant experience. Kwasner has been a finalist in the Redlands Art Prize, North Sydney Art Prize, Shoalhaven Contemporary Art Prize, Maitland Art Prize, Rookwood Cemetery ‘Hidden’ Sculpture and the Hutchins Drawing Prize, Tasmania. She has been a recipient of an Art Start Grant, Australia Council (2011) and the Vytlacil Residency in New York (2012), and her work is held in private collections both in Australia and abroad.
