2019 FRANZ Rising Star Project

Concept of artwork 設計理念:

During a residency in 2019, I was able to practice in a porcelain factory in Jingdezhen, China. Immersed in the factories production line and working alongside the craftspeople I found myself responding to the process and techniques used to create the work in the factory. In my practice I investigation the emotional response evoked from my collection of childhood ornaments and the ways in which identity and memory are often imbued upon cherished toys and personal souvenirs, many of the objects in my collection would have been created in factories like this one. Responding to my love of these objects and now seeing them made from start to finish, passing through the many hands of the craftspeople on the factory line I developed a greater understanding of the care, perfectionism and technical skill required to make even the simplest cast figurine. The hours of labour applied is overwhelming; however, the many discarded casts that do not make the grade evoked feelings of a foreboding but nostalgic emotion. Upon collecting these factory rejects and incorporating them into my pots, I have attempted to celebrate the many lost hours and labours of love with these Waste Not Pots.
