Concept of artwork 設計理念:

Blue and White Basket is formed by squeezing colored and uncolored clay material through a nozzle by hand. It is a replication of 3-D printing, except it is all done by hand. This object takes around 30 hours to produce. In that time-frame, I make thousands of decisions about where the profile is heading. Each drop is a waypoint in the design of the object. There is no inside surface vs. outside surface, there is only the object and the space it contains. It’s a really beautiful process. This form is a low cylinder, arguably one of the most geometrically simple and accessible shapes. It is vessel in its most empirical form. The pursuit of porcelain is centuries old and well-storied, tracing from East Asia across to Western Europe. As an American artist and engineer, I am referencing and questioning my relationship with blue and white ware. It’s an open question. What does it mean for me specifically to appropriate blue and white ceramics? How do we determine who can claim cultural practices and ways of making? This is the subtext of Blue and White Basket. It is at once referring the past and questioning contemporary making practices.

其他說明:

The ceramic porcelain material is extruded out of nozzle by hand to form beads that stack up and create form. This is a process that I developed to ask questions about materiality and craft process.

analogue version of 3D printing is playful and disdainfull of CAD reverence of contemporary practices. A truly challenging and provocative piece of critical design.
