Celia Dowson creates works that consider the domestic and ritual of everyday life. In her Porcelain Tides series Dowson combines light and dark porcelain to evoke the evolving landscape. Her newest bodies of work draw on the breadth of the natural world to create sites for reflection. Porcelain Tides is a body of work informed by the changing landscape and rolling clouds that are particular to the Gower Peninsula in Wales; I visit this coast often because I have family there. Rhossili Bay is this vast headland that juts out into a wild and changeable sea and with my work I want to draw out these qualities of the landscape. There is a huge tidal shift, so the pieces reflect that turbulence and movement.

My technique is to adapt traditional modelling and casting technique to create something individual. My ‘Porcelain Tides’ series are made through a thoroughly researched technique which I developed during my MA at the Royal Collage of Art. The technique combines both handmade and industrial process’ where combinations of black and white porcelain are worked into a mould using the speed and rotation of a Jigger-Jolly machine. The pieces are then sanding back in multiple stages to reveal layers of tone and mark embedded in each porcelain vessel. The final polish gives the outsides a quality that’s a little like marble; smooth, soft and tactile.
